The circumstances surrounding the creation of this book are detailed by the author in the Introduction. It was first published in 1966 by Laffont under the title Le cinéma selon Hitchcock (“Cinema according to Hitchcock”) in French, and then in 1967 in English by Simon & Schuster under the title Hitchcock by François Truffaut. The book resulted from a 52-hour conversation between François Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock, mediated by interpreter Helen Scott, which took place in 1962. After Hitchcock’s death (April 24, 1980), Truffaut returned to the book, adding a concluding 16th chapter and providing annotations for each of Hitchcock’s films for the new edition, which was retitled “Hitchcock/Truffaut.”
