Vasily Pavlovich Aksyonov is a recognized classic and a cult figure in Russian literature. His works are well known not only in Russia but also abroad. Aksyonov achieved success back in the 1960s—responding to the most complex and pressing issues with brilliant prose—he remained the voice of his generation for decades. Among Aksyonov's works beloved by readers is the trilogy "The Moscow Saga," written in the early 1990s and adapted for the screen in 2004. The trilogy includes the novels "A Generation of Winter," "War and Prison," and "Prison and Peace." Its action covers perhaps the most terrifying period in 20th-century Russian history—from the early twenties to the early fifties. The Gradov family, three generations of Russian intellectuals, passes through all the circles of hell of the Stalinist era—the struggle against Trotskyism, collectivization, the gulags, the war against fascism, and post-war repression.
