
“The Lay of Igor’s Host” is an outstanding monument of 12th-century Old Russian literature, recounting the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich of Novgorod-Seversky against the Cumans (Polovtsy) in 1185. The work is known for its high artistic merit, poetic language, and deep patriotic content. In it, the author appeals to the Russian princes for unity in the face of external threats, condemns internal strife, and glorifies the native land.
