Jorge Luis Borges

The World Library: Non-Fiction Selections

Book in Russian

Jorge Luis Borges is one of the most famous writers of the twentieth century, who largely defined the landscape of modern literature. The majority of the great Argentinean’s legacy consists of non-fiction prose: over a thousand pages of essays, reviews, sketches, prefaces, lectures, and various notes on the most diverse topics. These works (which the author called “intellectual adventures”) are no less captivating than Borges’s fiction. Similar to 'The Aleph' from his famous story—a magical point from which everything happening in the world can be seen—Borges’s texts attempt to encompass the entire universe: Dante and Shakespeare, Kabbalah and Buddhism, the history of angels and the history of tango, the riddle of time, fascism, film reviews, and the biography of Swedenborg.
