The twentieth century marked the “golden age” of Latin American literature. The beginning of the new Latin American narrative is generally considered to be 1949. It was then that the first “magical books” appeared—Asturias's *Men of Maize* and Alejo Carpentier’s novella *The Kingdom of This World*. “The inner energy of the poetic word lives in them,” said Miguel Ángel Asturias about the works of Latin American authors. *Men of Maize* captivates the reader from the very first words, immersing them in the dense atmosphere of magical realism.
